NORTHERN BEACHES  of Sydney & part of North Shore

The modern so called "standard door" comes in multiple but somewhat weird sizes.  In the past doors were made on every second corner by a local joinery workshop, so in older houses the door sizes varied enormously. Replacing doors is therefore a real science.  You will not believe how many times I have been asked to put in a door the client has already sourced, only to find that the door cannot be cut to size because it is hollow and there is not enough solid frame to trim it to the size required.  Thankfully this is mostly true of interior doors but some "engineered" Front and Back doors suffer a similar fate for different reasons.  There are a few doors which require a special order (at an additional cost) to get the size needed.

The other common mistake made is buying door latches which require special tools to fit them like mortise cutters (which I own) and finding almost nobody can install it or if they can, it entails additional hours of laboriously chiselling out a deep housings, adding unnecessary labour cost to what is otherwise a simple job.  Some latches need partial disassembly and turning a component around 180 degrees to get it to work in certain applications.

At Handy Work, we are tooled up with hinge jigs, housing cutters, door lifters, impact drivers, track saws, edge trimmers and spiral planers so we can properly install your door "lickety split".

Fitting New Doors - Fairlight

This pretty little cottage in Fairlight, built in 1912 as a miners cottage but since extended, had doors which had passed their use-by date.  New doors in keeping with the style were purchased and fitted to the somewhat twisted frames and hung on new stainless steel hinges with modern passage and privacy set latches in keeping with the style, giving the place a freshly renovated look as well as doors that closed properly.

After

The client was taking up a posting overseas and was about to rent out their home for a year or three and wanted to leave their prized wine collection under the house but with it safe from possible pilfering.  Handy Work had a custom door manufactured to the unusual size required and had it steel sheet encased to deter even a sustained attack.  A sturdy door frame was attached to the brickwork and structural timbers, tipple stainless steel hinging and a dead latch was fitted.

French Doors - Willoughby

This home had an open doorway between the lounge with a TV in it and the kitchen dining area.  The noise of the TV was annoying so French Doors were fitted .
